Cartagena is a fascinating contrast of old and new. Visiting the city on the Caribbean coast means you really get two cities in one.
Cartagena was the longest stop on my travels and so I had the perfect amount of time to explore beyond the top sights. I also took time out to chill, enjoying the Caribbean sunshine (and occasional thunderstorm!)
Many reviews stated that the walled city is the best area to stay, and I can see why for many reasons. If you do want to stay in a more historic area- Getesmi is a must. I opted for Bocagrande as it was the last stop on my trip and I wanted a bit of affordable luxury so I got this beautiful Airbnb.
No matter where you stay, you’ll want to explore both sides of the city.
Only 30 minutes walk apart, Bocagrande and the historic centre could not look more different.
While one side is a mash of colour, tradition and history, the other side resembles a shiny high rise Miami. It’s castles and street art in Getesmi vs. condos and beaches in Bocagrande.
By visiting Cartagena and taking time to explore all its areas fully, it’s truly is like having two destinations in one.
