Someone recently asked me how I decide where to visit. I really struggled to answer, because I wasn’t quite sure. It’s a combination of where I can fly to cheapest, the weather, affordable hotels, Instagram inspiration and reading about it in a guide book. But
every once in a while, somewhere catches my attention for no particular reason and I absolutely have to go. Most recently, this was Merida, Mexico.
I initially stumbled upon it’s existence through Meg Cale (Dopes on The Road) who set up base there. And the more I planned my route through Mexico, the more I found myself drawn to exploring it.
Merida was the perfect half-way point between Mexico City and my end destination, Holbox. I flew into Merida, Mexico Airport for about £40 and then caught a bus to Holbox. I’m really glad I followed my gut and went because it was wonderful.
It’s Not Touristy
While there are tour companies offering day trips, Merida still feels authentic and residential. Wandering the streets felt like a true Mexican experience and there are far less souvenir shops compared to everywhere else I went.
The Cenotes
Merida, and Yucatan in general, is fanouse for its Cenotes. There are hundreds of these natural water sinkholes that are suitable for swimming. Perfect for cooling off in the heat. Check out a cenote day trip to some of the highlights or try some of the local ones in the city.
It’s Safe
Unlike Mexico City, I felt completely safe exploring Merida as a solo traveller. The city centre has small town vibes (despite being the largest city in Yucatan state.)
The Hotels Are Affordable
Merida offers luxury hotels without the tourist mark-up in Cancun and Tulum. I stayed in a beautiful junior suite for about £50 a night.
You Can See A Wonder of The World
Ok, maybe not in Merida, but it’s the perfect spot to start a day trip to Chichen Itza. There are plenty of tour operators to choose from for a day trip out to the amazing temples and one of the seven man made wonders of the world.
It’s Colourful
And if none of the above reasons have convinced you yet… maybe these pictures will!
