They say that exploring a new city can give you a different perspective, but what about the new perspective giving you a different city?
Seeing a place from above is a unique way of taking in your destination. Here are my favourite cities with panoramic views.
Corcovado, Rio de Janiero
Certainly not the most peaceful panoramic view but one of the most dramatic. At the peak of Corcovado lies Christ the Redeemer, and panoramic views of Rio de Janeiro. For an alternative view and slightly less crowds try catching a cable car up sugarloaf mountain and looking back across to Corcovado.
Victoria Peak, Hong Kong
The number one thing to do in Hong Kong, climbing Victoria Peak can be challenging in the Asian heat but worth every moment. If you’d rather not climb, there is also the option of a cable car ride so seeing Hong Kong’s stunning skyscrapers from above, so its accessible to everyone.
Calton Hill, Edinburgh
Perhaps one of my favourite places in the world, the hill in the city centre that offers a panoramic view of Scotland’s capital city. Calton Hill is minutes away from the main streets of Edinburgh and yet feels a world away. Pack a picnic bracket wrap up warm if it’s the winter) and enjoy escaping the crowds for a day.
Monserrate, Bogotá
Get there on foot, by train or by cable car, but definitely get there. Monserrate in Bogotá offers panoramic views of the city from all sides. The mountain peak has numerous markets so there is no shortage of snacks when you make it to the top.
Duomo di Milano, Milan
In the heart of this northern Italian city, lies the Duomo di Milano. The cathedral has more statues on and in it than any other building in the world. Climbing to the top is breathtaking and so is the view. Get there early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Enjoy sitting on the roof of Milan’s most impressive building in the sunshine and taking in the views.
The Getty, Los Angeles
A challenging hike from Hollywood or accessible by car if you rent one. The Getty in Los Angeles lives up to its name as an observatory and offers 360 views of the city. Pack water if you intend to hike, as the LA heat can make this a challenging one.
And there you have it! The best cities I’ve visited with panoramic views. Where should I go next? Let me know by leaving a comment below.
