The Best Vegetarian Spots In The World (So Far)

I never consider myself much of a foodie, but naturally as I travel I’ve experienced some incredible vegetarian spots around the world.

I’ve been a vegetarian for four years now and I’ve had mixed success when finding vegetarian food while travelling. While some countries don’t naturally cater to vegetarian or other dietary requirements, others are a haven for meat-free menus.

I’ve decided to compile the best vegetarian spots in the world that I’ve found (so far). Hopefully you get the chance to try them out soon too.

Hermans, Stockholm

Hermans is an all you can eat vegetarian restaurant and was an incredible find in Stockholm. Especially because seeing Stockholm on a budget can be a challenge. With options from a salad bar, hummus and roast veggies to lasagne, chilli and quesadilla’s.

This cosy restaurant right opposite the Fotografiska Museum is a great spot for a late lunch or dinner. All You Can Eat Vegetarian food for 220 Swedish Kroner.

Bross Bagel, Edinburgh

This bagel chain started in Edinburgh and has opened 3 different stores across the city. Choose from vegetarian, vegan and non-veggie options.

Plus, the best part is the special of the week, which usually includes a vegetarian bagel option. The best so far has been the FalafHOLE, although it may be closely rivalled by this year’s Christmas special.

(If you’re spending Christmas in Edinburgh you need to check out this blog too)

PadThai Wok Bar, Budapest

Budapest is a surprisingly vegetarian friendly city. So it was hard to pick just one dish for my list of top vegetarian spots around the world. But I can’t visit this Hungarian city without a trip to the Wok Bar for their Smoked Tofu Pad Thai. Noodles, peanuts, smoked tofu and bamboo shoots. What’s not to love!

Little India, Singapore

Finding vegetarian spots in Singapore was notoriously challenging. I visited once in 2016 and once in 2019 and it definitely has improved with the years. However, the best vegetarian in Singapore has to be in Little India.

Rather than a specific restaurant, this is a district in Singapore. The entire area is crowded with authentic Indian restaurants. And since vegetarianism is taken incredibly seriously within some religions, many Indian restaurants even prepare the food in a totally separate kitchen.

Tagine, Marrakech

Before my visit I was concerned about finding vegetarian food in Marrakech. However, it was no problem. I highly recommend staying in a Riad during your time in Morocco and many offer home cooked meals for their guests in the evening.

Whether in the Riad or out in the main square of the city, ordering a vegetarian tagine was always an option. Tagines look different each time but usually involved roasted veg, cous cous or chickpeas, a tomato sauce and a ton of flavour.

Las Sorrentinas, Ilha Grande

This place in Ilha Grande was so good, we ate there twice!

While pasta is usually associated with Italy, this particular style of pasta originated in Argentina. The pasta is filled like ravioli and topped with a variety of sauces.

Every evening the menu offers 5 types of filling and 5 sauces, most of which are vegetarian friendly. So you can go back time and time again and never eat the same thing twice. (Although you’ll probably want to!) My favourite combination was the ricotta filled pasta in a creamy tomato sauce.

Clear Café, Canggu

I loved Clear Café Canguu so much that I wrote a whole blog about it.

Bali is a haven for vegetarian options. It has even made my “top vegetarian spots around the world” list twice. Clear Café Canggu has a range of options. However I highly recommend their smoothie bowl which consisted of granola, coconut and banana topping on an avocado smoothie. Can it get any healthier?!

Sage, Ubud

My second delicious vegetarian spot in Bali lies in Ubud.

Away from the main town and bustle. While there are many marvellous vegetarian restaurants in Ubud, this one was by far the best. So good I visited twice. The entire menu is vegetarian / vegan. It wasn’t my cheapest meal in Ubud, but it was the BEST.

Acai Bowls, Rio De Janiero

Did you even go to Rio if you didn’t eat an Acai bowl on the beach?

These super-food, frozen cups (or bowls) of goodness are everywhere in Brazil and especially on the beaches in Rio de Janiero. Buy an Acai cup from a street vendor, and choose whether you wish to add some syrup and fruit on top.

Then kick back, relax and eat like a local. On the whole, since Brazil is big on BBQ, it wasn’t the best vegetarian spot in the world, but the Acai bowls made up for it.

Churros, Madrid

Tapas, fresh calamari, patatas bravas… Madrid is any foodies haven.

However landing it as one of the best vegetarian spots around the world is Madrid’s famous churros. Churros can be found all across the city, but for the best churros in Madrid, you need to head to Chocolateria San Gines. You’re guaranteed to find a line out the door. But it’s worth the wait for a bag of fresh churros and a cup of hot chocolate to dunk them in.

And the best part? It’s open 24 hours a day!

Chipotle, London & USA

Now, any American reading this is probably going to think I’m bonkers. But I fell in love with Chipotle during my travels in America and now any time I can get my hands on one I can’t resist.

Finding a Chipotle in the UK is a challenge, so it’s always a treat when I take a trip to London and can squeeze in a visit. The sofritas and portion sizes in London don’t always match it’s American counterpart, but I enjoy it nonetheless. And yes, I pay extra for guac.

Tip: Ask for a bowl with a tortilla in the base, for all the benefits of a buritto, without the mess!

Veggie Garden, Barcelona

This vegan restaurant in Barcelona is so good, I’ve been three times in two trips to Barcelona!

The set menu is around 8-10 Euros and it includes a 3 course meal and drink. The menu is often Indian inspired and it rotates regularly. So every visit is different. But no matter when you go, the food is always wholesome, freshly made and entirely vegan.

And that’s it! My pick of the best vegetarian spots around the world.

That I’ve found so far anyway… I’m sure as I continue to explore, the list will grow longer. Perhaps I am a secret foodie after all!
