How To Take A Day Trip To Asilah From Tangier

If you’re visiting Tangier, it’s likely you’ll want to take a day trip from Tangier to Asilah.

While on our trip to Morocco we spent 3 days in Tangier. However controversially we didn’t love Tangier at all. Therefore, the natural thing to do was to take a day trip to the nearby town of Asilah.

This blog covers how to take a day trip from Tangier to Asilah.

Asilah is a small seaside town right outside Tangier. It wasn’t the most beautiful place we’ve ever been, but it was certainly more chilled than Tangier. If you have a few days to spend in North Morocco I’d recommend taking a day trip from Tangier to Asilah.

How To Get From Tangier To Asilah

The day trip from Tangier to Asilah was super easy.

  • Transport: Train
  • Duration: 5 – 6  hours in total. (1 hour travel each way, 4 hours exploring)
  • Cost: 50 dh Train Ticket (Round trip)

We departed Tangier Centre Ville Station at 11:30 and arrived at around 12:30. It was very easy to buy a ticket at the station, and given how cheap it was (£2 each way) we opted to travel “First Class”

The carriages were very comfortable. A little “Harry Potter-esqe” with 6 seat seats per cabin, and a sliding door out into the corridor.

The walk from Asilah train station to the actual town of Asilah was around 30 minutes along a rather dusty road.

We left at around 4pm again, returning from Asilah to Tangier at 5pm.

When To Visit

We visited in March. The weather was very pleasant, but it wasn’t ‘hot’. This was perfect because culturally in Morocco, you should cover your arms and legs when exploring.

What To Do On A Day Trip To Asilah

Enjoy The Beach

Asilah is right on the coast and the beach right outside the town is pretty to look at. The harbour area is worth a walk around and I imagine in the hotter months its even more popular.

(We visited in March and it was jeans & shirt weather.

Wander the Streets

The majority of ‘things to do in Asilah’ was wandering around the streets and just taking it in.

The streets and walls are colourfully decorated. Like a classic Moroccan town, Asilah’s streets are maze-like. There’s no specific direction or street to see, just let your feet take you and see where you end up.

Something I loved about our day trip was that it never felt as intense as when we walked around Tangier. Very few people asked us to buy things and we felt safe walking about.

Take Iconic ‘Door’ Pictures

Did you even go to Morocco if you didn’t take Instagrammable pictures in doorways. Asilah is no different. Plus it’s a quiet enough place that you can shamelessly have a photoshoot without many people walking past.

Enjoy The Street Art

Asilah has some beautiful wall murals throughout its streets. It’s hard to describe where to find them. But the more you wander, the more you will find.

And that’s about it! Sure, a day trip to Asilah isn’t jam packed with things to do. But its a great place to wander around for a day. Especially If you like spontaneous photo shoots!
