Instagram vs. Reality: What the Captions Should’ve Been

We all know that Instagram is the highlight reel of people’s lives and Instagram vs Reality are two very different things. But it can be easy to get caught up in the shiny polished images and forget that from time to time.

I love sharing my travel highlights and pictures on Instagram. I hope that it will inspire other female solo travellers, LGBT travel and travelling on a budget.

But I always value honesty and authenticity above all else. My Instagram isn’t perfect and I keep my location in my bio at all times to avoid the false illusion that I’m somewhere I’m not.

But that being said; I’m as guilty as the next person of doing it for the ‘gram or writing a caption that doesn’t truly reflect what going on.

So, as a reminder of the vast gap between Instagram vs reality, Im sharing some truths. That we shouldn’t hold ourselves to the often unrealistic perfection portrayed in 3×3 grids on your screen.

I’m serving up travel realities and re-writing some of my captions to be a little (lot) more realistic.

Instagram vs Reality

Gozo, Malta

Reality: My uterus is exploding and as soon as I get this shot I’m leaving the beach to take an hour’s bus back to the hotel for pain killers before I pass out.

Nha Trang, Vietnam

Reality: It hurts to move every part of my body because I fell asleep on the beach yesterday.

Lagos, Portugal

Reality: I just walked 10 miles and I can no longer feel my feet.

Lanzarote, Spain

Reality: Every time I stop surfing I remember that T**** got elected today and I want to be sick.

Sintra, Portugal

Reality: I have over edited this picture to hide the fact it rained the entire day.

Bruarfoss, Iceland

Reality: I haven’t found an affordable vegetarian meal since I arrived and Im getting hangry.

Rome, Italy

Reality: I’m recently single and ignoring all of my feelings by eating a lot of pizza.

Phuket, Thailand

Reality: This is the 5 minute window between thunderstorms and grey skies that lasted 90% of the trip.

Escadaria Selarón, Brasil

Reality: I’ve been on 4 continents in the past 2 weeks and I’m not sure what day it is anymore.

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Reality: It just hailed so hard I think I’ll have bruises tomorrow.

Olhao, Portugal

Reality: I massively underestimated the heat and length of this cycle and definitely should’ve brought a water bottle.

Christ the Redeemer, Brasil

Reality: Christ the Redeemer is behind me, but it’s so crowded I’m taking a picture of the view instead.

And to clarify.. most of the time the captions are exactly as they should be.

Lisbon, Portugal

Reality: Lisbon makes my rainbow-loving heart so happy 🌈🤗🏳️‍🌈

And that’s it!! (For now!)
