If you are travelling to Malta, it’s essential that you visit the Blue Lagoon on Comino Island for the day. In every way, I massively underestimated how incredible the Island of Malta is, and especially the beauty of Malta’s Blue Lagoon.
This blog contains all that you need to know about how to visit the Blue Lagoon Malta, what to expect and why you should go. Read on to have the best day trip to Comino Island you possibly can.
Where Is Comino Island Malta?
Comino Island is the home of Malta’s Blue Lagoon. It is the smallest of the 3 islands that make up The Archipelago of Malta. It sits between the main island of Malta, and the mid-sized Gozo.
The island has only a few inhabitants and zero cars or tarmac roads.
It is 3.5 square km and sits north of the main island, between Malta and Gozo.
While small and often quite crowded, if you have more than 3 days in Malta, the Comino Blue Lagoon is absolutely worth a visit for the day.
How To Get To The Blue Lagoon Comino Island
Visiting Malta’s Blue Lagoon is relatively easy.
- If you are staying in or around Valletta you should allow at least an hour to get to the ferry port on public transport.
- Or there are the options to sign up to a more organised tour to Blue Lagoon Malta. However this blog focuses on how to visit the Island of Comino without taking a tour.
Getting the ferry to Comino Island
- Catch an early ferry from Ċirkewwa. Ċirkewwa is a harbour situated on a point at the northernmost part of Malta.
- Boats leave every 30 minutes-1 hour depending on the season and tickets are 10 Euro for a round-trip.
- The return trip includes a small detour via some caves which is a nice bonus if you don’t plan to take a specific caves Boat Tour.

How Long Does It Take To Get To Malta Blue Lagoon
The journey to Malta’s Blue Lagoon takes 25 minutes out and 35 minutes return to & from the harbour at Ċirkewwa.
If you include the travel from Valletta, if going by public transport, t will take closer to 2 hours.
Tip: I opted for a hotel in the north as I knew I wanted to visit Comino and Gozo.
What To Do At Malta’s Blue Lagoon
When preparing to visit Blue Lagoon Comino Island, I would recommend taking some food with you as there are only a couple of food trucks and not much else once you get there.
Once on the island, it can get pretty crowded as the day goes on. There isn’t much by way of beach as its mostly rocks surrounding the shore.
Arriving early to secure towel space on the beach is essential. And by towel space I mean, the square inches of your towel and nothing more.
The water is STUNNING, super clear and very inviting. I spent most of my time in the water just floating about. Certainly more space than on the sand.
Later in the day I took a walk up and over the hill for some gorgeous views and a lot more space.
I also found more hidden coves up and to the left as you disembark the ferry. Had I found them sooner that would’ve made for more peaceful sunbathing so I recommend checking it out when you arrive.
Despite the crowded beaches, there are plenty pockets of space and peace to be found by walking a little more inland or away from the main pier.
All in all, Malta’s Blue Lagoon and the tiny Comino island is a highly recommended day trip from Malta, for the striking blue water alone.
